Teneros annual survey finds companies still lack disaster recovery plans TENEROS ANNUAL SURVEY FINDS COMPANIES STILL LACK DISASTER RECOVERY PLANS FOR CRITICAL CORPORATE ASSETS

Respondents Recognize Email as Business-Critical but Can’t Afford the Infrastructure Needed to Protect their Data

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., February 18, 2010 — Teneros™, Inc., a market leader in messaging solutions, today announced the results of its annual IT disaster recovery survey, which found that companies of all sizes have no plans in place to protect their employees’ email from site level outages despite recognizing email as their most mission-critical corporate asset. While most businesses expressed a desire to put a disaster recovery plan in place, the cost and infrastructure needed remain gating factors to adoption.

Thirty-two percent of the 595 organizations surveyed have more than 5,000 employees at more than 20 locations. These companies are managing 5,000-plus individual mailboxes and are using Microsoft Exchange 2003 or 2007 at an on-premise data center. Also significantly represented were SMBs, which managed 100 to 1,000 mailboxes but had the same issues as larger enterprises surveyed. Indeed, more than 50 percent of respondents rated the prevention of email downtime as important, very important or extremely important, but do not have the funds needed annually to support a traditional disaster recovery solution despite their information-intensive markets, such as healthcare, financial services, legal services, and manufacturing. More than two thirds of companies surveyed indicated that in the event of an unplanned site outage, no more than four hours of downtime would be considered acceptable. While 44 percent of companies use a branch office or a remote office data center server as the remote “disaster recovery” site, more than 25 percent of the companies didn’t even have a remote data center location for recovery. In the SMB market this percentage was significantly higher.

"Email is the most important communication and file transfer system in the corporate world today, but it is often too costly for companies to invest in the infrastructure needed to protect their data," said Michael Osterman, principal of Osterman Research. "The cloud’s cost-savings, always-on availability and reliability can solve this problem. Companies that offer disaster-recover-as-a-service will enjoy a massive new market opportunity while solving one of the key business problems facing information-intensive businesses today."

Teneros DR-as-a-Service provides enterprises of all sizes with a global disaster recovery solution that requires no upfront capital expenditure and is so simple, it can be implemented in less than an hour. The new hosted service leverages Teneros Instant-On™ failover recovery and replication technologies that underpin the company’s existing high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions for email and unified communications. DR-as-a-Service offers the expanded capability of addressing businesses’ holistic IT infrastructure and DR planning requirements. Increasingly, businesses are deploying and managing an array of diverse applications and services in support of mission critical activities. DR-as-a-Service addresses this complexity and allows businesses to prioritize disaster recovery initiatives based on the value and importance of content delivered by the applications. The new service provides application-aware DR across three components of enterprise DR planning—network, communication and information.

In addition to eliminating the need for costly datacenter and hardware deployment, DR-as-a-Service mitigates the ongoing operational costs of managing a DR solution for a business’ complete IT infrastructure. Previously, small and medium sized businesses have lacked the budget and technical expertise to justify the cost of a DR solution to be used for emergency restoration. DR-as-a-Service dramatically lowers the ongoing operational cost of ownership of a complete DR solution by eliminating the need for dedicated in-house clustering expertise. Teneros dedicated 24X7 monitoring ensures adequate bandwidth allocation and software management, including updates, patches and compliance enforcement. Using DR-as-a-Service, businesses can deploy IT resources in support of their core competency and rest assured that Teneros DR-as-a-Service will be available in the untimely occurrence of a site-level disruption.

"As our annual survey confirmed, email is critical for enterprises of all sizes—and it is absolutely under-protected," said Ben Petro, president and CEO of Teneros. "The Cloud holds the promise both to help enterprise IT infrastructures continue to scale and to bring powerful disaster recovery to SMBs for the first time. With Teneros DR-as-a-Service, we look forward to bringing companies peace of mind and business continuity in the face of any natural or business disasters."

Teneros will offer a free webinar, "Annual IT Disaster Recovery Survey Results: A Closer Look at IT DR Practices" on Wednesday, March 2rd, at 11 a.m. PT. For more information, please visit http://ww2.teneros.com/lp/Webinar_Landing_pages/Webinar_IT_Survey_results.html.
